Ulster Chess League update — 04/12/25

Downpatrick faced Citi Knights on 4th December 2025. A board-by-board summary:

Board 1 — A tense game unfolded with an endgame position reminiscent of a World Championship match between Kramnik and Leko. Jonathan Boyd defeated Michael Devine with a checkmate delivered by two rooks after time trouble affected his opponent’s play.

Board 2 — Finn Davey lost to Oisín Cinnsealach in a Petrov Defence, where the Downpatrick player struggled with the theoretical complexities.

Board 3 — Owen Dummigan won against junior player Jonah Corr using the French Defence, recovering a lost pawn and successfully converting the resulting rook endgame.

Board 4 — Dermot Maguire drew with David Garvin in a Pirc Defence game that evolved into a complex middlegame before simplifying to an even position.

Board 5 — Martin Lannon defeated Freddie Corr in a Réti, leveraging a pawn advantage and trapping a knight before executing a decisive knight fork.

Result: Downpatrick achieved 3 wins and a draw and an impressive overall score of 5.5 / 7, placing them 2nd in Ulster Chess League Division 2.
